Taking pictures of a winter landscape

Have you ever noticed how much fun can look around the ice ponds, some interesting forms it can take? And notice, what an interesting pattern on the ice can pour freshly fallen snow? Winter photographer presents a lot of interesting stories, one of them - the ice in all its forms.

Of course, the ice can be removed in different ways. The photo is possible to show specific details close-up, you can make ice element of a winter landscape.

Located near the lake in the mountains, I prefer the second option. It is believed that if the theater begins with a hanger, the landscape begins with the foreground.

A common mistake when taking a winter landscape - photographed against the open sun. Of course, I want to get a picture with a beautiful sun, but the result is usually obtained with a large picture of overexposure in bright areas and failures in black in dark areas of the frame. So do not rush to take daylight into your frame: to show him how to not have enough capacity (dynamic range) of the camera. Instead of the sun in the sky to get a huge white spot.

Of course, this rule there are exceptions, but they are rare. For example, the sun is not as bright, if there is fog or just beyond the horizon or setting behind it.

To save yourself from unnecessary problems, get a more natural, juicy and interesting picture, I decided to photograph not the sun, and wait until it goes over the hill. For this, I was rewarded with the last rays of the sun, illuminating the sky and the tops of the mountains. In the meantime, the sun is high, you can look around: surely you will find interesting camera angles and shooting direction without the sun in the frame. Often it looks very good lateral coverage (when the sun from the side), it can be emphasized volume, texture subjects.

To make pictures with a strong foreground, is convenient to use extra wide angle optics. I used the lens Nikon AF-S 18-35mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED Nikkor in conjunction with a full-frame camera Nikon D810. For cameras with a matrix of APS-C (such as Nikon D3200, Nikon D5300, Nikon D7100) can recommend an excellent wide-angle, designed specifically for the "Kropa" and gives a very wide viewing angle - Nikon 12-24mm f / 4G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor.

To achieve a large depth of field (to dramatically and turned back and front), the survey was conducted on a closed aperture. And in order to get the perfect picture quality - at the minimum ISO. Of course, these settings will have to make a long shutter speed. Therefore, without a tripod when shooting can not do such. To make the most impressively show the ice, I chose a very low point shooting. Well, when a tripod can be put "on the string": the practice shows that most of the tripod does not need a solid height, and vice versa - the ability to shoot from low points. In my case, the survey was conducted from a height of 15-20 cm from the ice level.
